Carl Spitzweg
Gnom, Eisenbahn betrachtend (Gnomen). Um 1848.
Oil on panel (lid of a cigar boxl).
Wichmann 485. Roennefahrt 1406. With initials in lower right. 24 : 14,7 cm (9,4 : 5,7 in). Our painting is a great example of Spitzweg's compository mastery. A dwarf observes a train, passing a valley's bottom below him, from a remote cave on an elevated position. The old and the new time are contrasted and seen with a critical view by Spitzweg. The world is going to lose its myths, as technology is taking the world over step by step. Ghosts, fairies and trolls, incarnations of an untouched ... more

Carl Spitzweg
Fränkische Sommerlandschaft. Um 1870/75.
Oil on panel (wood of a cigar box).
Wichmann 1421. Roennefahrt 272. With initials (just barely visible) in lower right. With old number "16" on verso. 13,1 : 18,7 cm (5,1 : 7,3 in). During a period of maturing, Spitzweg dedicates himself to the vastness of landscapes in small formats. The increasing importance of the sky with its colour changes of light and shade is in the centre of his attention. Spitzweg takes his preferred format, in form of small wooden panels or cardboards, along in his paint-box, so that he can create ... more

Carl Spitzweg
Zwei Fischerhütten am Waldrand. Um 1840.
Öl auf Papier.
Rechts unten mit dem Nachlassstempel. 19,3 : 27,5 cm (7,5 : 10,8 in). (Siegfried Wichmann, Spitzweg. Zeichnungen und Skizzen, München 1985, S. 22). [MD]

Der Wald von Barbizon. 1851.
Oil on panel.
Wichmann 552. Roennefahrt 631. With estate stamp on verso (Lugt 2307). 12 : 24 cm (4,7 : 9,4 in). Spitzweg goes on an important journey along with his brother Eduard and the painter's colleague Eduard Schleich the Elder in 1851. They stay in Paris from the 4th till the 25th of August, on occasion of the industrial exhibition, next they travel to the world exhibition in London. This work presumably originates from a trip to Fontainebleau, as can be inferred from Spitzweg's notes. He presumably encounters the style of the "School of ... more

Carl Spitzweg
Der Bücherwurm. Around 1850.
Pencil drawing.
Stamped with the blue Nachlass mark lower right (Lugt 2307). With very faint inscription upper right. On paper. 33,5 : 21 cm (13,1 : 8,2 in), size of sheet. Very beautiful preliminary study of the 'Bücherwurm' (Wichmann 534-541). The motif of the disconnected outsider who lives in his own world and complety devotes himself to the acquisition of knowledge is taken up by Spitzweg and characterised in a tenderly-ironic fashion in several paintings.
